What You Should Know About Pool Tables

Having your own pool table can be fun and give you many hours of enjoyment. One slight word of possible caution is to be very sure you will use it! If you’ve just started playing and can’t get enough of it, you may want to hold off for a while to see if you still want to play as much then. If, however, your mind is already made up, you should then find out as much as you can about pool tables so you can pick one that fits your tastes and budget. If you get the right table, it can give you endless hours of fun for many years.

The most important part of a pool table is obviously the surface, and to keep this in great condition so the pool balls can roll on it as they should, you have to maintain it properly. Get a brush designed for brushing pool tables, and remember to brush your table consistently. As you brush, move in only one direction, from end to end. Also, never brush your table in a circular motion. If you have a new table, then in the first several or three months it is recommended to brush your table more often than you would an older table.

If you want something other than the typical pool table, you may want to consider a Carom billiards table. The slate beds on Carom tables have a thickness of at least 1.8 inches, which is one difference. This is in contrast to the one inch minimum thickness for the slate bed of a regulation pool table in the U.S. Additionally, the slate beds of Carom tables must be heated to a temperature of around nine degrees F higher than room temperature. The reasons for heating the slate are to prevent moisture from accumulating in the table cloth. The idea is to create a faster and smoother game, which is helped by a dry cloth.

Italy and Brazil are the two countries where the slate used in pool table beds is mostly found. Slate from Italy is usually softer than that which comes from Brazil, and the advantage of this is that softer slate is more flexible. But a table made from hard Brazilian slate is likely to last longer. It’s unbeatable when it comes to durability and the ability to put up with all kinds of treatment. A pool table bed that’s at least 1″ thick and constructed from Brazilian slate is going to be so solid that you really don’t have to worry about it every breaking.

There are quite a few kinds of pool tables, ways to build them and types of billiard games. Size and cost are two of the main considerations people have when they think about purchasing a pool table. Yet, so many varieties of pool table are made that at least one can probably accommodate your needs. You have to make some choices or compromises if your heart is set on a table that’s unaffordable. You could look into financing options, or you could see who might be selling a used pool table in your area. Just remember that you can get a perfectly good pool table that’s not in the highest price range.
