Lifestyle Choices Often Causes of Snoring

For most snorers the causes of snoring are linked to with lifestyle choices and the results of these choices. Many people discover they have developed a snoring problem because their partner is kept awake at night. It becomes necessary to remedy snoring so that both you and your partner can get a healthy nights rest.

Common Causes of Snoring

The causes of snoring are varied but most of them are related to how a person chooses to live. Many people snore because they eat too much and don’t exercise enough. This can lead to obesity, which is one of the primary causes of snoring. Other lifestyle choices that affect snoring are: drinking too much alcohol, smoking cigarettes, or taking sleeping pills. The position in which one sleeps can affect snoring and so can nasal congestion.

Too Much Food, Not Enough Activity

Perhaps the most common of the causes of snoring is being overweight. Obesity is increasingly common and is usually a result of a sedentary and overindulgent lifestyle. Eating too much and exercising too little usually cause a person to gain weight. Even being a little bit over weight can contribute to snoring. This is because the increase is skin around the throat can constrict the airways while sleeping. Luckily, a more positive lifestyle can solve the problem.

Are You Drinking Too Much?

Alcoholics also tend to have snoring problems. Some people only snore after drinking alcohol and this is an indication that they are probably drinking too much. Alcohol is a depressant and this causes the esophageal muscles to relax more than they normally do. This paired with the slower reaction time resulting from alcohol intake can be one of the causes of snoring. Luckily, this problem can be avoided altogether by not drinking alcohol or by drinking less alcohol.

Sleeping Posture

One of the more easily solved causes of snoring has to do with a persons posture while sleeping. Many positions that we can sleep in make it more difficult to breathe. Often sleeping on the back can lead to snoring. This is because this position causes the chin and neck area to relax and compress onto the airway. This problem is compounded when a person is overweight.

Nasal Problems

Many people that don’t normally snore find themselves snoring when they are seriously congested. This is one of the causes of snoring that can be easily treated with medication. If you are congested as a result of allergies then there are many antihistamines available over the counter. A head cold that causes stuffiness can often be relieved through the use of a humidifier in the room.
